....to New Arbor Bible Church
The word “arbor” is the Latin word for “tree.” In English, it has come to mean a shelter with a roof formed by trees.
In 1824, John Allen and Elisha W. Rumsey came to our area and noticed all the trees and the natural arbors they formed. Both men were married to women named “Ann” so they took the common name “Ann” that their wives shared, and combined with “Arbor” and founded the city of Ann Arbor, the city that defines the region where we live.
The Bible uses the metaphor of trees to describe a strong, thriving spiritual life. Psalm 1:3 says that those who delight in God’s word “like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers.”
The Bible also says that our lives are made new in Jesus Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!”
Imagine, then, New Arbor Bible Church as a thriving collection of trees, made new by the grace of God and growing deeper in our faith through the word of God. Imagine the Ann Arbor region being converted to faith in Jesus Christ, and seeing God plant a New Arbor in us and through us by the power of God, for the glory of God.
